Inaugural Fenceline Theatre Company Awards Night and Season Launch

It is a great honour to present the following recipients of the Inaugural Fenceline Theatre Company Awards.

I believe that the production and performance experience for young people is invaluable and I want to extend what we could off here at Swan beyond the limitations of the drama curriculum. I am a passionate advocate of the performing arts, particularly theatre and its inclusion into a well-rounded and sophisticated education.

I believe these awards are a vital part of that journey. They honour and acknowledge not only the gifts and talents of the people sitting in this room but their ability to see something come to fruition, to be generous, to collaborate and to express themselves creativity, which is an invaluable intelligence.

As an artist and a director, I have had the privilege to work with many talented people, not least of which are a part of this community. But these awards are about the best.

There are certain criteria that is universal for ascertaining this and I will explain this.

  1. As a director, I always look for performers who can take direction. Sounds straightforward enough, but it isn’t.

  2. I am a text base director who in the school environments defaults to physical interpretation of material, rather psychological for obvious reasons. As performer mature or certainly come and work with Fenceline as Alumni, I am more than happy to employ other more challenging performance strategies, if I believe the performer is open to that. But the key factor here is that I look for a performer who can interpret text on their volition.

  3. Finally, as a director I am very cognitive of how much direction a performer requires from the director to bring the role or character into an authentic betrayal. When an actor is generous, when they trust the director and the cast, sometimes without themselves even knowing…then there are moments on stage that are quite frankly magical. These are the gifts that they share. They transport and engage their audience into a myriad of responses and that is priceless.

Obviously, there are levels within each of these and different performers have their individual strengths and weakness.

I have watched the development of these young people over several years and will continue to watch them mature as they, I hope, continue to develop this; their other selves.
